Ode Gen 2 or Sculptor 078: which fits your morning?

The capacity difference matters more than it might look. A 20 g pour-over fits comfortably within both published limits. A 50 g batch fits within the Ode’s listed capacity but exceeds the standard 078 hopper’s approximate 30 g allowance. Timemore lists hopper extensions separately; compare that additional purchase if large batches are your normal morning.

The cup

Does the 078 make better coffee?

It can make coffee a reviewer prefers. That is a narrower—and more useful—claim than “twice the price, twice the coffee.” Clarity means how easily you distinguish flavors; body is the drink’s weight and texture. Neither is a universal score, and both grinders deserve more than a contest of burr diameters.

A direct comparison gives the 078 a real argument

In Hoon’s Coffee’s May 17, 2026 comparison, he brewed the same Colombian Geisha, described as an inoculated carbonic honey process, with 15 g doses. He preferred the 078 cup’s brightness, sweetness and juicy character, while still calling the standard-burr Ode Gen 2 a capable alternative.

The brews finished at approximately 2:11 and 2:19. Similar drawdown times help describe the experiment; they do not prove identical extraction. This was an open tasting of one coffee, not a blinded, repeated trial across roast styles. His result makes the 078 interesting for that kind of coffee. It cannot tell you how much more you will enjoy your usual washed blend.

The broader evidence is less tidy

Asser Christensen’s long-term 078 review describes particularly compelling results with some very light, natural and anaerobic coffees, but frequent preferences for other premium grinders with washed coffees. He also found motor speed changed the balance to his taste. That is useful dissent: the grinder’s character can be a reason to buy it and a reason to audition it first.

There is strong enthusiasm elsewhere. In Lance Hedrick’s May 2023 Sculptor comparison, the 078 was his clear filter favorite in testing that included an Ode with SSP multipurpose burrs. That supports the 078’s potential, but it is not a blind victory over the standard Gen 2 burrs recommended here. The configuration is part of the evidence, not a footnote to discard.

The standard Ode is already a serious filter grinder

Arne Preuss’s complete Gen 2 review at Coffeeness reports rewarding changes in sweetness, texture and body while adjusting grind size with a fixed 20 g/300 g recipe. Christensen also praises the balance of the Gen 2 burrs, although he tested those burrs inside a Gen 1 body. We use that as burr evidence, not a test of the newer anti-static system.

Ode: fewer decisions at the counter

The Ode’s published features describe a simple sequence: weigh beans, choose the grind, start the motor and let it stop when the beans are through. The magnetic catch cup, anti-static system and knocker aim to make the transfer to your brewer less messy. Its larger capacity is the more concrete advantage for a household brewing a carafe.

078: more control, with a little more attention

The 078 gives you a separate motor-speed control as well as its grind dial. Treat that as another variable to learn, not a setting you must change for every bag. Start with a repeatable recipe and adjust one thing at a time. Published tasting preferences do not establish an ideal speed for every coffee.

Timemore’s FAQ specifies a 60-second automatic shutoff and recommends closing the lid after loading to limit beans bouncing out. That timeout is different from the Ode detecting that grinding has finished. The rotary knocker clears the chute with a twist. In the long-term review linked above, Christensen liked the knocker but reported hopper feeding frustrations; early-unit experience does not prove every current batch behaves identically.

Neither “low retention” nor “quiet” settles the comparison

Reviewers describe both grinders favorably for noise, but their recordings and measurements come from different rooms and methods. We cannot responsibly rank one as quieter from those numbers. If the sound matters to someone sharing your kitchen, seek a demonstration of each.

Returning nearly the weight you put in also does not establish that no older coffee remains inside. Follow the maker’s care instructions, including Fellow’s Gen 2 manual, and ask the seller about burr access and service before a problem arises. The 078’s deeper disassembly was more involved in Christensen’s account; do not translate favorable retention results into “never needs cleaning.”

What does the extra money actually commit you to?

Our checked standard configurations were $399.95 for the Ode and $799 for the 078: a $399.05 difference before applicable tax and extra charges. Promotions can narrow it. Compare the final price of the selected model, not a starting price for a mixed-model product family or an expired campaign.

The Timemore terms make “buy it and see whether you prefer it” a poor assumption. Establish a seller’s actual demonstration or return options first. These are published policies, not our experience making a claim, and a manufacturer’s storefront does not establish another retailer’s terms.

Already own an Ode?

Make the upgrade answer a specific question

If your Gen 2 makes coffee you enjoy, keep it until you can describe what is missing. “I want to compare how this processed light roast tastes on the 078” is a useful reason. “The internet has moved on” is an expensive one.

Before spending, repeat your usual recipe with the same beans, water and filters, making small grind adjustments and tasting as the coffee cools. If possible, try the 078 with that coffee and your normal dose. An impressive demonstration with somebody else’s exceptional beans answers a different question.

SSP burrs turn the Ode into another configuration, with another cost and flavor argument. We would not add them automatically or assume that a comparison against an SSP-equipped Ode settles this stock-burr decision. If you own a Gen 1, investigate the compatible Gen 2 burr upgrade before replacing the entire grinder.

A few questions worth asking

Is the Sculptor 078 the same as the 078S?

No. The 078 uses filter-focused Turbo burrs and stepped adjustment. The 078S uses a different burr configuration with espresso-oriented stepless adjustment. Check the letter on the order, not just the photograph.

Which is better for a large batch?

The standard Ode is our choice between these two: its listed 100 g capacity leaves more loading room than the 078’s approximately 30 g standard hopper. Check your usual coffee dose rather than the number of “cups” on a brewer.

Should I throw away what comes out of the 078 knocker?

Reviewers differ. Hedrick describes discarding it for filter; Christensen questions making that a default. We would not prescribe a fixed discard amount as necessary. If you experiment, weigh what reaches the brewer and keep the recipe consistent; otherwise you are changing the dose as well as the grounds.

Is the 078 worth twice the price?

For a buyer who has a clear preference for its cup and accepts its capacity and purchase terms, potentially. For most people choosing a first capable electric filter grinder, our answer is the Ode Gen 2. Neither recommendation requires you to dislike the other grinder.
