About this coffee
About Bensa Kokosa Bensa is a woreda (district) within the well-known coffee-growing region of Sidamo; it lies within a valley in a mountainous area with kebeles (communities) throughout. Kokosa is one of these kebeles. The main income source here is coffee that producers grow on very small farms intercropped with false banana trees for shade. Because of the high elevation and rich soil, fertilization rarely happens in this area. Even though coffee is a main crop, recently, many people in the area have begun to replace coffee trees with non-native plants like eucalyptus and khat that are more harmful to the environment due to their large consumption of water. But, they don’t need the same kind of careful management like coffees does, so many young people are turning to them instead of coffee because it turns a profit more easily. But, there are still many producers who want to preserve the ancient agricultural knowledge and produce really tasty coffee. We’re thankful for partners like Red Fox who provide access to this market; it’s crucial to the survival of coffee in Bensa. This classic Ethiopian washed coffee is fermented for a couple days before being dried on raised solar beds; the coffee is frequently turned so that it dries evenly. The final product is juicy and super sweet with a beautiful acidity.
