Tandem builds its identity around a compact Portland ecosystem: coffee roasted in East Bayside, pastry baked in the West End, and vinyl woven through the experience. Will and Kathleen Pratt founded the company in 2012, opening a café and roastery in a 1930s brick building near their home. Roasting later moved into a separate building across the way, keeping production and hospitality on the same small campus. The coffee program centers on a rotating selection of single-origin lots and seasonal blends, sourced through relationships with small growers and specialty importers. The café keeps its menu focused—seasonal espresso drinks, pour-overs, tea, pastry, retail beans, and a curated record selection—while a coffee-and-vinyl subscription makes that musical interest more than decoration. Its environmental work carries the same practical tone, pairing reusable-container refills and a single-use cup charge with candid discussion of the limits of compostable packaging.
