The independent, locally owned San Francisco roaster directly sources almost all the coffee it roasts, building relationships with farmers, cooperatives, and mill workers across Latin America, Indonesia, and East Africa. Its buying philosophy resists tidy labels, favoring long-term, region-specific work with producers and partners.
The same hands-on stance shapes roasting. Highly trained people—not automated systems—control a vintage German roaster, then evaluate their decisions through cupping. The target is clarity: sweetness, acidity, complexity, and the qualities that made each coffee worth buying.
That point of view carries into hospitality. Four Barrel operates San Francisco cafe spaces including Valencia and The Mill, while Valencia also hosts small workshops for home baristas covering extraction, milk steaming, latte art, freshness, and espresso variables.
